Keith Hayes’s Expertise I started my research career with the Institute of Offshore Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, in 1993. Here I worked with Dr. Jon Side to develop quantitative risk assessment techniques for the abandonment and disposal of offshore platforms, and for demersal trawl interactions with subsea well heads and pipelines. Jon and I worked on the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) for the abandonment and disposal of the Unocal Heather Platform, provided advice to Shell International on disposal options for the Shell Brent Spar, and also assessed the risk of demersal trawl interactions with Shell's Eastern Trough Area Project facilities. In 1997 I joined the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Hobart, Tasmania, and completed my PhD in Quantitative Ecological Risk Assessment in 2000. Since joining CSIRO I have led numerous research projects addressing the ecological risks associated with invasive species, transgenic organisms, coal seam gas and mining operations and major coastal coastal developments. I currently serve on the Science Leadership Team of the NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub (https://www.nespmarine.edu.au/) and I am the team leader of CSIRO's Data61 Environmental and Ecological Risk Assessment (DEERA) team (https://www.data61.csiro.au/en/Who-we-are/Our-programs/Expertise-Analytics/DEERA). My research interests lie in quantitative ecological risk assessment methods and cumulative risk problems, together with indicators of environmental change and environmental monitoring methods.
