  As a child, I struggled to learn to read due to hearing difficulties that slowed my progress in many subjects. When that was resolved, and I finally caught up with my classmates, I leap-frogged children's books in favour of adult fantasy. It wasn't until I did a module in Writing for Young People during my BA Creative Studies in English at Bath Spa University that I revisited children's books and fell in love with them. As soon as I graduated, I began Bath Spa's prestigious MA Writing for Young People. As well as children's books, I had a passion for Japanese anime and manga, so once I graduated with my MA, I moved to Japan. I studied Japanese full time at The Yamasa Institute, passing Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Level 1 being the highest and Level 5 the lowest). During five years of study and work in Japan, I taught English across a wide range of institutions and industries; from school children as young as six, to employees at companies as well-known as Mitsubishi, Toyota and Fujitsu. I was among the first primary school English teachers to implement a new standardised syllabus, grasping and communicating new concepts to a variety of comprehension levels. I was also able to demonstrate key publishing skills by creating my own materials for students as well as editing their work. After Japan, I worked in various bookshops in Australia, including possibly the largest bookshop in the Southern Hemisphere, Dymocks Sydney. I was one of very few staff to work across all departments, but the children's book floor was my favourite. In 2016, I moved to Scotland to study Publishing at Edinburgh Napier University. I was the first president and co-founder of the Edinburgh Napier Literary Society, and an Editorial Board Member of Scottish Book Trust's 'What's Your Story?' young writers initiative. I was also fortunate enough to secure a competitive place on the Penguin Random House Job Hack event held in Glasgow in October 2016 and to experience the Saltire Awards 2016 as a shadow panel member for their First Book Award. In 2017, I completed a six-week work placement in the PR Department at Scottish Book Trust, where I wrote a double-page article for the Sunday Herald, two blog posts and several press releases, as well as securing press passes and sourcing author photographs. While completing my MSc Publishing, I began my career in children's publishing. Now a Commissioning Editor, I love children's books more than ever.
