  After working in accounting for over 20 years, I decided it was time for a change. While my achievements in accounting brought me some satisfaction, the work itself never truly fulfilled me. I needed a change and knew I couldn’t sit behind a desk, staring at a computer screen all day, but I had no direction. In 2019, I joined the greenskeeper crew at Deer Creek Golf Club because free golf was an excellent perk, and the only openings were in maintenance. It was hard, physical work, but I found something I genuinely enjoyed. The best part, besides free golf, was that at the end of the day, I had something to show for all my hard work, whether it was the flowers I planted or the stripes I made on the turf with my mower. After two years at Deer Creek, I expanded my career as a landscape horticulturist at Raccoon Creek Golf Course. There, I was given the creative liaison to come up with my own designs and choose all the plants that went into the landscapes. I found my calling working with plants and planning landscapes. It is very physical work and can be challenging, but it fulfills me to create landscapes that benefit our pollinators and that people enjoy. After three years at Raccoon Creek, I pursued a job at South Suburban Parks and Recreation. I am excited to make the world a more beautiful place while continuing to grow my career in horticulture.
