As an English major at Washington University, I worked on numerous projects that developed my skills as a professional writer and researcher, including coursework in argumentation and oral communication and intensive research projects. My most rewarding work, however, has always been with Gifts from the Heart, a children's charity based in my hometown of Belleville, Illinois. GFTH began in 1996 and has grown exponentially since then-- it now provides over a thousand children in the Metro East with Christmas gifts every year. As a young volunteer, I helped guide shoppers toward the most popular and most demographically appropriate toys for the targeted age groups; today, I help out at the annual fundraising banquet by selling raffle tickets, providing food and drink to caterers and setting up and breaking down the event venue.
