Ludwik Sujkowski’s Expertise Research Experience. Developed and conducted research programs on population biology, dynamics, genetic polymorphism and diversity in pathogenicity/virulence of late blight fungus (Phytophthora infestans), its insensitivity to chemicals, epidemiology of fungal diseases, tracking dispersal mechanisms and temporal dynamics of soil borne fungal pathogens, response of plant pathogenic fungi to biological control agents such as genetically engineered bacteria. Collaborated with breeders in Poland, Netherlands, UK and Mexico to develop and evaluate resistance of potato varieties and cultivars to fungi and bacteria in different environments. It resulted in over 40 papers and abstracts published in European and American Scientific Journals, describing gene flow in P. infestans populations in Poland, US, and Canada, evolutionary changes in pathogenicity and resistance of P. infestans populations to fungicides, epidemiology of soil borne fungi and other aspects of fungal biology and plant –pathogen interactions. Major achievements: Developed and conducted a successful research program on population dynamics and population genetics of Phytophthora infestans which demonstrated genetic shifts, migration of new genotypes of the fungus into Poland, displacement of the old population of the fungus by a new population with higher genetic diversity and insensitivity to fungicides as well as with an increased specific pathogenicity (virulence) against potato. Made significant contributions to describing gene flow in P. infestans populations in Poland, US and Canada, to evolutionary changes in pathogenicity and resistance of P. infestans populations to fungicides and to understanding epidemiology of soil borne fungi. Developed monitoring system for tracking genetic changes in P. infestans populations in Poland and established large-scale field trials for evaluating potato genotypes for resistance to late blight under high selection pressure. Specialties: Developing research programs, establishing field trials, disease diagnostics and epidemiology, writing papers, research and technical protocols, giving lectures and presentations.
