Luisel Ricks-Santi’s Expertise Since graduating from Georgetown University's Tumor Biology Pre-doctoral Program in 2007, I have pursued biomedical research that focuses on cancer disparities, such as the genetic epidemiology of cancer in diverse populations and have received an NIH Loan Repayment Award based on this work. Along with leading the identification of genetic variants associated cancer, I have been actively involved in the development of a Program in Transdisciplinary Genomics at the National Human Genome Center, which addresses the ELSI of genome-based knowledge and technologies in the community, as well as its responsible translation and effective integration into health services and public policies benefiting population health. Observing health inequities and disparities, the ineffective translation of biomedical research, and decreased minority participation in research has compelled me to use my scientific background to: 1) ascertain the impact of genomics on the ability to identify groups at risk of developing diseases, 2) help health promotion programs to be directed at the most appropriate groups, and 3) promote personalized medicine.
