Margaret Lyell’s Expertise Margaret Lyell has a multi-disciplinary technical background involving areas of fluid dynamics / thermal modeling and distributed intelligent systems development. Her work in fluid dynamics and thermal sciences modeling has involved reacting flows, free surface flow configurations, drop dynamics and flow stability and ferro- (magnetic) fluids. This work has involved equation-based modeling with computational techniques in areas of fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, thermal science and most recently, electromagnetics. Her work in distributed intelligent systems has been applied to design and development of health monitoring applications (for power systems) and sensor web development using software agent technology. She has also engaged in software development in building simulations using agent technology and in integrating agent-based components with web architectures. She also applied agent software technology to robotic hardware platforms for robot team development. Work in this area has involved hardware –software integration, data flow management through distributed systems using ontology technology and incorporation of various algorithms to support system tasks. Her technical leadership has been expressed through research and applied development, technical program development, team formation and technical proposal authoring. She has over fifty technical refereed publications, including two book chapters. She has served on the Space Processing and Intelligent Systems Technical Committees for the AIAA, participated in standards development activities via IEEE-Foundation for Intelligent Physical Systems (FIPA). She was the lead organizer for AAAI's 2007 Fall Symposium workshop ‘Regarding the Intelligence in Distributed Intelligent Systems’. Awards include the SAE Ralph Teetor Award (1989). In support of her technical work, she maintains membership in multiple professional societies, including IEEE, AIAA, SIAM and APS /DFD.
