Mark Beattie’s Expertise I retired as a US Army Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel with over 28 years of service. After military service I spent the next eighteen years working contract jobs with various defense contracting companies supporting US Army training and training development at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The best and most rewarding contract I worked on during those years was “Human Terrain System (HTS) which supported operations in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2006 - 2014. We trained and prepared small teams of men and women to assist Army brigade combat teams (BCT) with cultural awareness of the local populations in both countries. I was with HTS from the beginning (July 2006), hired to develop a training program and curriculum to prepare the HTS teams to support the BCT’s. I didn’t do it alone……with the help of many good men and women, we created the program and training from “whole cloth.” There was no template to follow…..we had the freedom and flexibility to do what we thought best…..we made a lot of mistakes, but course corrected on the fly. It took seven years (2006 - 2013) to develop a professional training program and curriculum that truly produced quality teams……the next year (2014) the US Army shut the HTS program down. In September 2021 my wife and I moved from the KC area back to our home state of Illinois….that’s when I retired from our nations formal work force. It was a bit unexpected….one day I was working as I had for over fifty years, the next day it was over….deciding my daily schedule and hours was an easy adjustment….doubtful I’ll accept a traditional job ever again! :)
