Martin Goldberg’s Expertise I currently work as a lecturer in Clinical Microbiology at Birmingham City University where I teach students hoping to work in the health & pharmaceutical industries or in research & development. I am experienced in teaching all aspects of microbiology to under- and postgraduate students, as well as undertaking scientific research. I chair the biological safety committee at BCU and am leading a team of colleagues to prepare for accreditation of our biomedical sciences degree with the Institute for Biomedical Sciences and Royal Society of Biology. I have also taught food microbiology & food safety to under- and post-graduate graduate students at the University of Birmingham. These complex multifaceted disciplines require a detailed knowledge of the genetics, physiology and biochemistry of micro-organisms, combined with an equally comprehensive knowledge of the risks associated with each organism. I have also devoted many years to the study of bacterial gene regulation with a particular interest in control of virulence in food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli. My current research interests focus around ethnopharmacology - the discovery of antimicrobial compounds from natural sources. I am currently working on an antimicrobial compound from an edible plant that is highly effective against Gram positive bacteria, with some strains being eliminated withing 8 minutes. The extract has been found to be non-toxic in cell-culture and Galleria mellonella but is toxic to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Extraction and purification of the active ingredient from the plant is simple and rapid and could be particularly useful in developing countries as well as having a wide range of applications in developed countries. We have recently identified one of the active ingredients which has a minimum bactericidal concentration of 15ug/mL. This compound has also been shown to have anti-cancer properties, blocking replication of prostate cancer tumors for example. In addition to my experience of working in education, research and diagnostics, I have also managed a large and very busy research lab where I introduced numerous improvements to safe working practices. I have also set up and run public exhibitions designed to explain complex research programs in a simple and entertaining way. I am on the editorial panel for the online journal CPQ Microbiology (https://www.cientperiodique.com/journal/view/microbiology)
