Martin Knotters’s Expertise After finishing the "Hogere Bosbouw en Cultuurtechnische School" (nowadays Van Hall Larenstein) and after military service, I started in November 1985 working as a soil surveyor of the Dutch Soil Survey Institute (Stiboka). I was involved in soil survey projects in Pleistocene sandy areas in the south of the Netherlands. From July 1987 to July 1988 I was employed by the Land Development Staff of the Netherlandish Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Fishery, in the province of Utrecht, where I was mainly supporting policy making. After my return to the Soil Survey Institute I was involved in soil surveys in the river district and in the central part of the country. I developed a method to describe the hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of river forelands and applied this method in practice. I investigated the applicability of electromagnetic measurements in soil surveys to predict layer depths. In a validation study I evaluated geostatistical interpolation methods which account for ancillary information on electric conductivity. Since about 1994 I was involved in the development of new methods to characterize water table fluctuations, which resulted in 2001 in a PhD thesis on the application of regionalised time series models in the prediction of space-time variation of water table depths. Currently, my interests include the utilisation of statistical knowledge on uncertainty in taking decisions in environmental policy, and designing strategies for environmental monitoring. My challenge is to analyse decision problems in environmental management in which uncertainty is involved, and to find solutions which are simple to understand, practically applicable and scientifically sound.
