Mason Wright’s Expertise News organizations today are striving to appeal to audiences on an expanding array of platforms, and versatile editors like myself are critical to reaching readers and keeping them engaged. At The Globe and Mail, I’ve honed skills like editing, writing, editorial packaging, news curation, news judgement and photo editing for print, for digital platforms and for the specific needs of social media. I sweat the details, and I can juggle several assignments at once without getting rattled. I’ve learned how to analyze and visualize data that news and features articles are based upon, and I’ve picked up coding skills to enhance story presentation using HTML and CSS. I’ve also become keenly interested in audience analytics and how to interpret reader habits to improve journalistic offerings. All of this has been supported by a foundation of journalism skills I pursued in student newspapers and showed proficiency in while at the National Post early in my daily journalism career. The National Post is also where I began to work on newsroom tools and workflow, pitching in as a backup production editor and on a content management system (CMS) change in the early 2000s. Since then I have become professionally invested in helping develop behind-the-scenes tools that help journalists do their jobs efficiently. At The Globe, I was part of a team that introduced Slack to the newsroom, and later I built a Chrome browser extension that allows content creators to instantly look up terms in our stylebook. And in 2017 and 2018, I was the senior editor tasked with helping develop early versions of Arc as the Globe’s new CMS solution, and then led the training of writers and editors on Arc’s content-creation tools. I’m a proud generalist and a helpful problem solver and advocate in the workplace. I like to challenge conventions and can play the role of early adapter to new technologies. I am relentless in my pursuit of ways to make journalism meaningful to audiences wherever they can be found, and as easy as possible for newsrooms to produce. Journalism is a hotbed of innovation and rapid evolution, and with my broad skillset I am well positioned to make a difference to both newsrooms and audiences.
