I am thankful for the rich intellectual life and social connections that I have enjoyed as a teacher of probably 2500+ students. Looking back, I realize that ever since I first entered the classroom of an inner city school in 1972, I have been challenged to enable a diverse group of students to learn. I realize that whether working with non-native speakers from Asia or Europe or collaborating with teachers from many parts of the world, teachers must first understand how to communicate with them and listen to their needs. Whether students vary in their academic or socioeconomic levels or native languages, before dealing with the content and methods of the course, educators must first discover who their students are and how they learn best. Creating an appropriate, comfortable learning environment is a cooperative activity in which all participants work together to enable students to reach their developing educational goals. We must provide those experiences that reflect the reality of society’s dramatic technological changes in this global world of information so that our life long learners reach their full potential and humanity. Every student enters the classroom at various levels on a continuum with a complex group of characteristics like academic skill, linguistic aptitude, and cultural background. I believe an educator's goal is to provide learning which is comprehensible, yet challenging, through productive, meaningful activities that often involve real-life tasks that extend beyond the classroom. Teachers’ roles go beyond that of traditional classroom directors. They must continually evaluate the needs of students, facilitate and participate in the group process, research and learn about current methods, organize resources, and counsel.
