Max Banfield’s Expertise One of my many objectives was to develop ways of effectively treating, managing, or curing my own health problems. Some of my early methods were published as 15 essays in the Australasian Nurses Journal between 1978 and 1983, and more recently in 25 essays in the online responses section of the British Medical Journal between October 2013 and August 2014. I have developed many concepts with the main ones being . . 1 The Posture Theory (1980). 2. The standing computer posture (1998). 3. An exercise, and more general method for researching and treating chronic fatigue (now called the chronic fatigue syndrome) which has since been given the name of PACING (1976-83). 4. The cause of non-cardiac chest pain - postural pressure on a vertical sternum which loosens the rib cartilages to cause occasional slippage of one rib under or over another and impinge an intercostal nerve (published in the British Medical Journal on 13-7-14) The Posture Theory took five years to develop and presents evidence that it is the sitting position which causes many of the health problems of sedentary workers, rather than the previously ideas that the psychosomatic stress of book work was the cause. The standing computer posture took 23 years to develop as an effective treatment for the posture symptoms of desk work, and is now being taught at universities internationally, and has been followed by the manufacture of office furniture called Standing computer stations. The exercise method for CFS took about a year to develop, and was improved over the next few years and then defined when I was asked to design a project at the SA Institute for Fitness Research and Training in 1982, and is now considered to be the best treatment according to patient surveys. The basic principle is that individuals need to exercise and everything else at their own rate (i.e. at their own pace). I have continued to develop various methods relating to that ailment.
