  Unfortunately, far too often I hear “money terrifies me” or “I’m not good with money”. Learning about how to do money well (without learning the hard way) is a life win. Especially for women. Even though there is still so much ‘sh1t to change’, we can all do something now to become more confident, capable and skilled with money. In my experience (and the stats back this too), women are incredible at money, we just don’t often believe it, know it or realise we are. The stress and harm of not knowing how to do money well, can be all too real, especially for women. Add to this layers of conditioning, our upbringing, the stories we tell ourselves and the ‘shoulds’ and it’s a mix that often does not make for a harmonious relationship with money. As a Certified Money Coach (CMC) and FAESA accredited Certified Financial Planner CFP (just non practicing) with over 20 years in financial services, I’ve seen the impacts of not being able to navigate money. It can be all consuming and overwhelming, at any income. The good news: self awareness (behaviours, habits, patterns) + money capability (money management, savings) x action = is the game changer. My WHY: For society and women, the risk of not having financial independence and capability is far too high. Better outcomes happen for all when better wealth decisions are made. It’s so past time. Behaviours and beliefs can set us up (or do the opposite) at an individual level but also on a structural and systems level. We need more women earning, owning and growing wealth and being able to bring change at any table they sit at, for the better, for all. Women having skills and confidence around money, is proven to bring better outcomes, for them, their families, their communities and importantly for people and planet. This is what lights me up. What Inspires Me: Having witnessed intergenerational impacts into my family around not having enough money, I was encouraged to invest my first pay and learn lessons with money early. I also realised the women in my family over generations had been both brave and smart with money. They just didn’t realise this or believe they were capable. In my experience, the financial services industry is also very good at not listening to women. This awareness, has shaped my career ever since.
