  Micha Hamel (1970) is a composer, poet, theatre maker and researcher. For the past fifteen years he has focused mainly on composing full-length music theater productions, including two operas: 'Snow White' (the Nederlandse Reisopera, 2008) and 'Caruso a Cuba', (Dutch National Opera, 2019), and a series of interdisciplinary performances for the Holland Festival (2012, 2021). From 2010-2021, Hamel was professor 'Performance Practice' at Codarts University of Applied Sciences, Rotterdam, where he researched future concert practices. The research was published under the title 'Playing ground for classical music in the 21st century' (Codarts, 2015). A next research project investigated whether games are a suitable medium for qualitatively engaging audiences with classical music. This interdisciplinary project, funded by NWO, was a collaboration between Codarts, TU Delft, Erasmus University, and the Willem de Kooning Academy, and resulted in two performative game prototypes. Since 2015, he has been a member of the Academy of Arts of the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences), where he chairs the Arts and Science track. As an 'Artist in Residence' at NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study) in 2022, he worked on a book about listening, yet to be finished. As a free lancer he is a returning teacher at Utrecht University and Utrecht University College. At Utrecht University he worked on a project that introduces creative writing to high school students in order to enhance their citizenship. He also was an editor for a book on reading in education ('Omdat lezen loont').
