Michael Wekesser’s Expertise Mike Wekesser, Principal Director, Sports + Recreation + Entertainment at Stantec brings to his work decades of expertise and accomplishment in the fields of architecture and sports architecture. His projects--just a few of which are Target Field; Golden 1 Center; and Petco Park--have won numerous awards for design and for exceeding environmental standards. The common element in all of Mike's designs is an adherence to creating innovative, yet practical, designs that reflect organic settings and enhance the cultures and communities that benefit from his projects. Mike is a leader in sports architecture, having designed, planned, and constructed major league ballparks and NBA/NHL arenas, universities, training facilities, and minor league ballparks. Many of these projects included residential, hospitality, and retail development. Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Mike left the state after college and brought his design skills to firms in Dallas, San Diego, Kansas City, and Minneapolis. Mike's career in sports architecture began at HOK/Populous, where he was a senior project designer. Opportunities with Gensler; AECOM; and JLG followed, leading to Mike's current position as the Principal Director for Sports + Recreation + Entertainment at Stantec. In addition to his long career in sports architecture, Mike has experience in corporate, entertainment, transportation, and institutional architecture. He was the Lead Design Architect, Store Design, for Target Corporation. In this role, Mike was the lead designer for flexible-format, urban, and college prototype stores for city downtown sites and university campuses. Mike worked in transportation architecture with Harry Weese in Dallas; in institutional architecture with Landry and Landry in Dallas; and in corporate and entertainment architecture with Hope Design Group in San Diego. Mike is engaged in every aspect of the design process, from master planning to programming to design, delineation, and construction. In addition, as a design leader, he recruits and develops talent for his firm. The firms he has worked at benefitted from Mike's skills in design; leadership; presentation; and teaching--he has taught illustration and watercolor classes and led architecture students in studio competitions.
