Mike Dishman’s Expertise Mike Dishman is Professor of Education Policy & Governance and Dean of the College of Education at the University of West Georgia. In 1996, Dishman began providing legal representation to public school districts, with a particular emphasis on labor and employment issues in the educational context. Between 1996 and 2012, he was an associate, of counsel, or partner in several education-focused law firms. Concurrently, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska (1998-2001) and Associate Professor and Professor at Kennesaw State University (2005-2022). In KSU's Dept. of Educational Leadership, he coordinated graduate programs (2009-11) and served as Interim Chair (2011-12) and Chair (2012-14). In 2014, he became the first Assoc. Dean of KSU's Graduate College, and Interim Dean a year later. Following a national search, in April 2017, he began service as Dean of The Graduate College and Associate Vice President of Research Policy and Compliance. During his tenure, KSU’s graduate enrollment increased by approximately 19% (against a comparator average of 3%) while concurrently increasing offerings, selectivity, and rigor in the University’s graduate portfolio. He also intentionally and significantly increased the role of the University’s Graduate Faculty in administering graduate education. In January 2020, he became the University’s first Associate Vice Provost. On July 1, 2020, he concluded his administrative service at KSU and returned to his professorship. In March 2022, following a national search, he was invited to serve as Dean of the College of Education at the University of West Georgia (UWG). He co-authored six books and a number of articles on education law, leadership and policy. In 2009, one of his books, Leading Schools During Crisis, was selected by the American Association of School Administrators as one of seven 2009 publications meriting an “author discussion session” at the 2010 National Conference on Education. He consults nationally on issues of education policy and law and is a frequently requested speaker at state and national conferences. He holds a juris doctorate from the University of Mississippi and a doctorate in education leadership and policy from Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. He was admitted by examination to the state bars of Mississippi, Alaska and Georgia. He served on the editorial review board of the Peabody Journal of Education, the American Association of School Administrators’ publications review board, and is an education policy content reviewer for Rowman Littlefield publishers.
