Nicholas Ames’s Expertise My career and skillset can be summed up in a few sentences. Effective solutions to business problems require knowing the domain, knowing what computational tools will most effectively explore that domain, and being able to convince internal stakeholders of the reliability of engineering that encases those tools. At the nexus of these four paths of Domain expertise, Statistical analysis, Project engineering, and Effective product communication is where I thrive. My industry focus has been on a lot of projects but can be summed up with this mindset. For example, during my projects involving stochastic simulation and ML leveraging of large datasets. Much of breeding can be reduced to a very expansive and very complicated games of chance and probability, but where many of the rules are well established. Plant breeders understand and leverage most of these rules instinctively for genetic gain in their traits of choice. However, as pipelines become more complicated and resources come under pressure, these decisions are becoming more complicated and must trade-off different effects. In many cases, I served in a multi-faceted role of product owner, product outreach, domain expert, SME, coder, and communications. These combinations of roles make many decisions more productive as non-viable avenues of discussion or pursuit can be quickly ruled out. My work more recently has focused on ML/AI assisted breeding decisions and pipeline formatting. Working in this space has been incredibly productive as it has allowed me to get involved with new formatting and AI/ML tools for better decision making. Building off my previous experience as a data scientist/data broker, I’ve been able to step into partnerships with data engineers to guide development of internal modeling tools to accurately reflect the reality of production operations rather than getting hung up in artifacts and modeling errors. Ultimately, I have always been more focused on hooking up pipelines and scaling up operations than pure discovery and research. This is where I feel that my talents are best used, and frankly it feels more fulfilling to build tools that simplify operational management. I fully believe that it is the job of the data scientist to distill masses of data into useful information. If my client or project owners do not understand the output, then I have failed. The key to success in any project that I have worked in has been this combination of domain mastery, programmatic thinking and consultation, and definable and simple information that can be easily understood and acted upon.
