Nicholas Merrick’s Expertise Love learning about the environment? Me too! The natural sciences have always appealed to me, but I knew I wanted to work in environmental education after a life changing experience I had. When I was 16, I went to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. While there, we hiked up Moro Rock, and there happened to be a ranger giving a talk. Seeing her so passionate about nature made me realize that environmental education is what I want to pursue. I have worked diligently to gain experience relating to this field, having had internships and volunteer gigs where I've worked hands on with environmental education. I've worked and volunteered with two nature centers, which were Ijams Nature Center and Chattahoochee Nature Center, as well as the National Park Service, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, and Clyde M. York 4-H Center. Currently, I am an Extension Forestry Coordinator with Washington State University, where I lead and facilitate educational programs pertaining to our mission. My passion for the environment is clear in everything I do. From leading guided hikes for clubs, to volunteering with nature centers and parks, to developing environmental education programs, this field is my lifeblood. I strive to inspire others to enjoy and appreciate nature the same way I do. The best way to connect with nature is to connect with people – and this is something I understand well. Connection is the foundation of understanding, which is what inspires people to seek out more information and experiences. Having worked with customer interaction for over five years, I've learned how to foster meaningful connections, even through something as quick as waiting for coffee. My compassionate nature makes for heartfelt and lasting impact, and also translates into having strong bonds in the workplace.
