That research focused on Irish immigration from Ireland to the United States and culminated in a dissertation called Fever and Fists. I am very fortunate to have landed among the people of Bay County, Florida, and teach students at Gulf Coast State College. Like any new teacher, the process has opened my eyes to the challenge students face to pay for classes, books, transportation, and meet basic needs. College is more expensive than ever before and increasing every year. More than ever, questions about access, accountability, and academic rigor are impacting our state's higher education system. As an advocate for the Florida State College system, my professional and personal goals are one and the same- to provide leadership to our students and faculty and guide our colleges into the twenty-first century with the best principles of the twentieth. Pursuing higher education is not a personal luxury, it is not a lifestyle choice. It is a disciplined and rigorous process to enlighten and train the student to develop critical thinking habits.
