Paul Petrequin’s Expertise Project Open Handu2019s mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community. Every day, Project Open Hand prepares 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers daily to nourish our community. As Director of Advancement, I lead and coordinate necessary activities in planned and major giving programs, including managing stewardship efforts and executive counsel. I also collaborate with other not-for-profits and community organizations to promote our mission as well as common goals for the benefit of the community as a whole. At CCS, I provided fundraising counsel to nonprofit organizations across multiple sectors, including religion, education, human services, and membership organizations. My work included campaign planning studies, in which I lead extensive strategic discussions with key organizational constituents, review operating practices and processes, analyze donor data, and ultimately develop informed recommendations for a personalized campaign plan. I also lead development assessments, entailing a detailed analysis of an organization's fundraising history and current operations. This required an extensive review of available data, constituencies, and fundraising methods, as well as in-depth internal discussions with leaders and executives to better understand their roles and organizational processes. For clients interested in moving forward with a comprehensive or capital campaign, this is a crucial step to determine their readiness and what best practices can be implemented prior to undertaking a year-over-year sustained fundraising effort. Lastly, I provided campaign management to coordinate day to day operations for large fundraising campaigns, research and track prospects, tailor solicitation strategies, and train volunteers. These campaigns ranged in size and scope from seven-figure to nine-figure operations.I served as an institutional resource for complex assets through planned and current gifts, advising and managing philanthropic portfolios regarding donor-advised funds, private foundations, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, real estate, life insurance, retirement accounts, bequests, and life estates. I drafted advisory memoranda regarding charitable gifts and acceptance procedures, working closely with senior leadership and outside counsel to review and revise agreements. I worked to ensure organizational compliance with internal policies, applicable government regulations, and client requests. I met with professional advisors, high-net-worth individuals, and families to highlight charitable planning options at the Foundation, leading event and conference planning both internally and externally to promote nonprofit and planned giving services to philanthropists and charitable organizations. I served as the Foundation's representative at philanthropic conferences, meeting with other nonprofit professionals to promote mutually beneficial opportunites and provide thought-leadership in open forums. I assisted engagements with nonprofit organizations to forge partnerships through Foundation funds and donor gift options, specifically through fiscal sponsorships, planned giving opportunities, nonprofit investment pools, real estate trust management, and other customized philanthropy services. As an associate at the Nonprofit Legal Center, I worked closely with the managing attorney to provide legal counsel and entity formation services for hundreds of nonprofit and 501(c)3 clients. I drafted articles of incorporation, bylaws, amendments, mission statements, and required state and federal registrations for these organizations, as well as providing counsel for board management, oversight, and financial reporting. I provided business development by expanding the firm's trusts and estate, probate, and planned giving practices. I researched and drafted client and firm resources and marketed our service lines across multiple platforms, both new and familiar, resulting in an increase in business to fledgling practice areas. I worked closely with the managing attorney to develop and provide training and engagement opportunities to clients and the community in the areas of nonprofit formation and trusts and estates. My day-to-day also entailed the drafting and revising of client contracts, ranging from employment agreements and intellectual property licensing to business mergers and fiscal sponsorships. I provided legal and financial counsel for my clients, advising as to best business practices and creating templates for their own internal processes and management. As a Senior Associate for alliantgroup, I worked with businesses and their CPA firms to identify and secure tax credits, incentives, and deductions. My role centered primarily on the research and development tax credit, 179D energy efficient commercial buildings deduction, and the Interest-Charge Domestic International Sales Corporation (IC-DISC) export tax incentive. My portfolio typically consisted of over 50 clients at any given time, requiring unique management approaches and excellent project-management and discipline. I worked with and managed a team of multi-disciplinary tax professionals to qualify and quantify these tax incentive opportunities, requiring a detailed analysis of business records, including tax returns, project documents, executive and employee interviews, and qualified research expenses. I served a variety of industries, including manufacturing, software development, aerospace, architecture, engineering, construction, agriculture, pharmaceutical, and fashion, ranging in size from start-up to Fortune 500. My work secured multi-million dollar findings for my clients, and I consistently led alliantgroup's metrics for work sustained and client referrals based on the quality of my research. As a Legal Fellow recipient, I had the privilege to work alongside some of the most intelligent and talented attorneys and staff in the world at the American Civil Liberties Union Capital Punishment Project, providing legal research and writing on behalf of defendant's unjustly facing capital punishment in North Carolina. Our work led to historic outcomes and findings of racial biases in the judicial system.I provided substantive legal research and information verification throughout the judgment and sentencing phase of the Military II case, involving Augustin Bizimungu, Franu00e7ois-Xavier Nzuwonemeye, Innocent Sagahutu and Augustin Ndindiliyimana. Working closely with associate legal officers and judges, I drafted legal briefs and memoranda to determine the validity of claims regarding command responsibility for atrocities committed during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Specifically, the prosecution's case rested largely on the culpability of several defendants based on the military hierarchy within the Gendarmerie Nationale, Rwandan Armed Forces, and the Reconnaissance Battalion (RECCE). I advised the court based on ICTY jurisprudence, witness statements, and aggravating and mitigating circumstances, ultimately resulting in the judgment handed down in May 2011.As an associate at Lenamon Law, I worked closely with the firm's managing attorney in the defense of Grady Nelson, a convicted murdered facing capital punishment. My role focused largely on the research and presentation of mitigating circumstances at the sentencing trial, which included the introduction of an expert witness to testify on the voracity of quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) evidence. This testimony, along with brain-mapping scans shown to the jury, demonstrated Nelson's diminished mental capacity and involuntarily predisposition to impulsiveness and violence. My work included legal memoranda and deposition preparation, specifically aimed at amplifying mitigating evidence and jurisprudence in light of the facts while reducing aggravating circumstances based on Florida and federal statutes. Based on this and other facts, the jury ultimately decided for life in prison over the death penalty.International tax and business services.
