My career is architecting, developing and supporting software systems to support large-scale state and national testing programs (mostly K-12). It is an exciting time to be in software development because of the rapid changes in technology options. We’re moving rapidly to leverage Amazon cloud services. Scoring and reporting millions of student assessments in a short time frame has always been a challenge and it has become more so as online testing replaces pen and paper testing with even shorter turnaround times. Scaling in traditional data centers is difficult because of the cost and time to provision new equipment. With cloud technologies, we have been able to use serverless and autoscaling technologies to create new and much more responsive architectures. I am currently working on a data lake project that involves storing huge amounts of data and providing APIs and tools to access and analyze the data. While that presents a whole new set of challenges, it’s also enabling us to do things at speeds and volumes we never thought possible!
