Peter Carravetta’s Expertise Peter Carravetta is Professor of Philosophy at Stony Brook University. He was the Alfonse M. D’Amato Professor of Italian and Italian American Studies at Stony Brook from 2008 to 2018. PhD in French & Italian from NYU. He taught at CUNY from 1983 to 2007. He has been visiting or exchange professor at universities in Paris, Nanjing, St. Petersburg, Columbia University, and Middlebury College, as well as a Fulbright Scholar in Madrid and Rome. The following partial list of publications reflects his varied academic and professional interests. Founding editor of Differentia, review of italian thought (nine issues 1986-1999, now online), and author of: Prefaces to the Diaphora (1991); Dei Parlanti. (2002), Del postmoderno (2009; English translation forthcoming in 2019), The Elusive Hermes. Method, Discourse, Interpreting (Aurora, Colo., Davies Group Publishing, 2013), La funzione Proteo (Aracne, 2014), After Identity (Bordighera 2017) The continuation of the Hermes project is dedicated to the politics of method and interpretation in Italy during the Cold War years. He is also at work on a collection of his writings on European Humanism in the post-humanist age, and a book on migration and colonialism. Carravetta has lectured on contemporary critical thought (American, French, Italian), post-modernism, issues in higher education, and aspects of contemporary poetics and politics. Carravetta is also the author of several books of poetry in two languages, including The Other Lives (Guernica 2012) and L'infinito (Campanotto 2013, Winner of Montano Prize).
