I have the privilege of advising, encouraging, and mentoring the staff on my unit, and setting the tone of a shift. I also get to build connections with patients and family and to provide another avenue by which they can be respected and heard. Have you considered who the nurses in a hospital call if they are concerned about their patient, but don't know if the doctor will be equally concerned or come right away? That would be me, a member of the rapid response team. In this role, I build connections with nurses throughout the hospital, so that they will trust me enough to call me with their concerns that "might be nothing, but I wanted to make sure." I get to be part of streamlining the process of moving patients with declining clinical status to a higher level of care. In each of these roles, I get to use my clincial expertise, evidence-based practice, prior experiences, interpersonal communication skills, instincts, and empathy to advocate for my patients, my coworkers, and other nurses in the hospital.
