Riley Graham’s Expertise I am responsible for developing and executing commercial and business strategies for our portfolio of Gene Synthesis Solutions. In this role, I collaborate with partners across business units including commercialization, strategic partnerships, R&D, logistics, and finance. With guidance from our leadership team, I am accountable for the P&L, business strategy, and lab process development for the department. - In my previous role as a Process Development Scientist in the Next Generation Sequencing group at Azenta, I worked on projects that integrate across wet lab (molecular biology), dry lab (bioinformatics) skill sets. Broadly, this work included researching, developing, and creating go-to-market strategies for genomics products and services, as well as optimizing and scaling current services. In my time in this role I built next generation sequencing services from the ground up, guideding key aspects of both commercial campaigns and technical launches. - My thesis addresses chromatin regulation, the process by which DNA interacts with histone proteins to control gene expression. This system of control enables genomes to code for the hundreds of cellular outcomes that make up a multicellular organism. So called epigenetic systems function in the differences between neurons and skin cells, but also are essential for complex traits like behavior and disease. My work focuses on the modification of histone proteins by epigenetic enzymes. My thesis work identified a role for the histone modifier HDAC1/RPD3 and its binding partner complex, CoREST, in programming behavior in ants. We observed that major worker ants, which normally never forage, can be 'reprogrammed' to behave like minor worker ants using HDAC inhibitors, an epigenetic drug. Both behavior and gene expression of reprogrammed majors resembles that of minors, suggesting a link between epigenetic function and the cellular 'programming' of behavioral and gene expression pathways.
