My thesis work identified a role for the histone modifier HDAC1/RPD3 and its binding partner complex, CoREST, in programming behavior in ants. We observed that major worker ants, which normally never forage, can be 'reprogrammed' to behave like minor worker ants using HDAC inhibitors, an epigenetic drug. Both behavior and gene expression of reprogrammed majors resembles that of minors, suggesting a link between epigenetic function and the cellular 'programming' of behavioral and gene expression pathways.
