I graduated from Whitworth in December of 2016 and substituted for the rest of the school year. As the 2017-2018 school year got underway I was approached by the principle at Northwood Middle School to be the lead teacher in a new behavior intervention program they were starting. This led to a non-continuing contract for the rest of the school year at Northwood. As the lead teacher, I was instrumental in creating a multi-tiered system of support for at risk students. Some supports included teaching skills using resources like, Skill Streaming and Positive Behavior Mapping. I also used a variety of data tracking tools to monitor growth. The best of these included a Check-In, Check-Out (CICO) system where we graphed student progress and shared it digitally with administration. I also used Google Forms in conjunction with staff to allow, around the school monitoring, via a laptop, phone, or whatever type of digital device was convenient for them to use. During the school year, I received PBIS and Right Response training. I found the PBIS training especially helpful while setting up our own token economy for our rewards based CICO system. While doing this, I hoped to model what an effective system could look like as the school transitions to a full PBIS model. I feel immense satisfaction and pride in the accomplishments I made in the lives of kids at Northwood. Unfortunately the position is a non-continuing one and ends this year, but I look forward to my next endeavor and the challenges it will bring. Spokane Public Schools
