Ronald Weber’s Expertise My career began with training in Internal Medicine, then Neurology and Neuro-ophthalmology, before and after my military service in the US Navy and the US Public Health Service (National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness). I had a successful academic and private practice career in neurology for many years before pursuing an encore career as a jazz producer in the nonprofit sector. I am adrummer who played timpani with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra ; and as a jazz drummer in combos led by pianists Phineas Newborn, Jr, Kirk Lightsey, and Barry Harris, as well as Stan Getz, Terry Gibbs, and Joe Henderson; all this while attending college and then medical school. The last 26 years have been spent as a jazz producer having presented the Hollywood Jazz Festival for 14 years and an overlapping a seasonal concert series, that will be going into its 24th year. I continually aspire to raise awareness of this great music, while recognizing that most people will never even recognize jazz when they hear it. Music in America has reached depressing depths. The Great American Songbook from Broadway musicals and Tin Pan Alley seems distantly removed, yet it remains the best of what once was "popular music." Jazz musicians still cherish those standards and the compositions of jazz composers, such as Ellington, Monk, Brubeck and many jazz artists whose works will only be heard by jazz lovers. Thank God for genius talent of pianists Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. Specialties: I think I have modest writing talent and have been successful writing cultural arts grants to keep my organization afloat. I immodestly believe that I have impeccable musical taste and know how to program a balanced series that reflects the highest level of excellence and diversity in the genre and frequently challenges audiences, nudging them from their comfort zones to explore innovations in this fluid artistic medium.
