Sandi Hayes’s Expertise I strive to improve the lives of those diagnosed with cancer through improving their physical activity levels during and beyond their treatment. With a personal and family history of cancer, I first became interested in the potential benefit of physical activity for those with cancer during my undergraduate degree in exercise science. At that time though, there was only a handful of exercise oncology studies (all of which involved walking interventions for women with breast cancer), and the advice given to those with cancer was to ‘rest and take care’. It quickly became my mission to generate the necessary evidence to change clinical practice, and to improve cancer survivorship through physical activity. Over the past 20+ years, my research findings have contributed to a consistent and compelling evidence base that demonstrates higher levels of physical activity post-cancer are associated with fewer treatment-related side effects and complications, as well as improved function, quality of life and survival. Findings from my exercise trials also demonstrate that progressive, targeted exercise intervention pre, during or following treatment is safe, feasible and effective at improving the lives of those with cancer. Concurrently, advice given to cancer survivors has shifted – no longer are patients advised to rest; instead patients are encouraged to be as physically active as possible and to strive for 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise (including aerobic and resistance-based exercise) per week. Yet, the vast majority of people with cancer are insufficiently active at time of diagnosis, experience declines in physical activity post-diagnosis and fail to meet the evidence-based physical activity recommendations. It is now my priority to undertake the necessary research which will generate findings that will force the equitable inclusion of exercise oncology services into cancer care and to support cancer survivors in improving their lives through physical activity. I am also committed to (i) building research capacity through quality supervision and mentorship of postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, (ii) up-skilling the clinical workforce who will deliver exercise oncology services, and (iii) educating the multidisciplinary oncology team to promote physical activity to their patients and to refer patients to exercise oncology programs and services.
