Sara Pfaff’s Expertise A dedicated educator and researcher, I graduated from Brown University in 2018 and have held Visiting Assistant Professor positions in English, American Studies, and Writing Programs at Kenyon College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a lectureship at Fordham University in Literatures of Race and Social Justice. As a teacher and scholar, I study how pathology dismantles rigid ways of conceptualizing community and points to more adaptive forms of belonging that can better navigate rapidly shifting social, economic, and political networks. In this endeavor, I am inspired by critical race, ethnic, and indigenous studies; democratic theory and political thought; critical pedagogy; science and technology studies; complexity and systems theory; and disability studies. I use these critical and theoretical tools to understand how agency and forms of belonging have become more elastic and nuanced in response to the unprecedented challenges presented by the rise of neoliberal economic policies. My current project examines the prevalence of illness in Afro- and Indigenous American fiction written since 1980, and the ways in which such sickly identities offer alternatives to conventional models of communal affiliation and organizing. A portion of this work was published in the journal LIT, and other chapters have been presented at the annual meetings of the ACLA, NeMLA, and MELUS. I view academic scholarship and writing not as trophies but rather as tools for making and shaping knowledge. This requires all of us to collaborate and deploy our analytical training and insights to untangle complex problems arising in our world. Above all, I train my students to see their writing and scholarship not as means to display exotic ideas but as a cartographic craft, a mandate to map the ever-unfurling, ever new, landscape at their own feet. I firmly believe that institutions of higher education which foster intellectual growth and moral probity in their students, faculty, and employees are ideal places to pursue the tripartite balance of teaching, research, and service that fuels my own pursuit of equity, antiracism, and social justice.
