Sarah Varley’s Expertise I'm a third-year PsyD student at Point Park University and work as a milieu therapist at Western Psychiatric Hospital. My primary clinical interests are in humanistic & non-pharmacological approaches to SPMI, first psychotic experiences (prodromal phase), and racial disparities in mental healthcare practices and outcomes. I am specifically interested in barriers along the pathway to care for racial minorities diagnosed with SPMI, particularly: (1) coercive referral via ambulance/police/social services, (2) lack of familial/social community-based supports, and (3) mistrust stemming from subversive racism. Finally, I am also invested in gaining knowledge in community-based task-sharing models of treatment, as well as existential perspectives concerning the influence of neoliberalism and global capitalism on psychopathology (namely treatment-resistant/chronic anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation).
