After a period of postgraduate training in Ireland he travelled to the USA where he completed training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He completed a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada before returning to a staff position at the Mayo Clinic in the Division of Endocrinology with a joint appointment to the Division of Health Services Research. Recent professional achievements include delivering to completion a large multi-centre study evaluating 2 different methods of follow-up of patients with type 1 diabetes following structured education (the Irish DAFNE Study), being part of a successful bid to establish Ireland’s first and only School of Podiatry in NUI Galway, being appointed Chair of the EASD’s (Extra-European) Postgraduate Education Committee and being appointed Head of School of Medicine NUI Galway.
