Shujing Liu’s Expertise My past and current research work focused on utilizing transgenic mouse models, microRNA technology, and traditional Chinese herbs in order to make discoveries that have significantly advanced the fields of cancer biology and cancer therapy. I have made important original research discoveries on the mechanism by which the bee venom protein melittin prevents liver cancer cell metastasis. In addition, I have discovered how NM23-H1 expression is associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma migration to the brain. I have uncovered the mechanisms involved in how microRNAs miR-200c and miR-205 expression are associated with melanoma metastasis and acquisition of drug resistance. I have examined and subsequently determined the mechanisms by which the anti cancer drug Norcantharidin induces melanoma cell apoptosis. I also uncovered a critical role for Snail1 protein expression in the regulation of hypoxia-induced melanoma metastasis. Further analysis of Snail1 expression revealed that microRNA-9 increases E-cadherin expression through inhibition of the NF-κB1-Snail1 pathway during melanoma metastasis. I also identified the proteins IL-8 and Cathepsin B as serum biomarkers for identifying patients with melanoma. I have determined that hypoxia sensitizes melanoma tumor cells and enhances therapeutic effect of sunitinib, and I have identified a previously unknown role for PHD2 as a tumor suppressor in melanoma. I have also discovered how Chinese herbs function during anti-cancer treatment. My coworkers and I found that FBXO4 opposes cyclin D1 accumulation and the tumorigenic possibility of the most commonly mutation in melanoma. My coworkers and I found that Exo70 isoform switching mediates mesenchymal-epithelial transition and tumor cell invasion, and that melanoma cells acquired cancer stem cell phenotypes through Oct4-mediated dedifferentiation.
