He was describing a new partnership I am developing on transforming the global industrial sector towards energy-efficient motors as a way to reduce CO2 emissions while increasing the competitiveness of businesses. The Motor Efficiency Global Alliance (or MEGA) builds off of a string of sustainable energy projects that are providing socio-economic benefits across the world: • GEAR (Grid Efficiency and Resilience, https://gear-initiative.org/) aims to increase the supply of electricity to African consumers and businesses by up to one-third, without increasing power generation. • CORE (Cornerstone of Rural Electrification, https://core-initiative.org/) is empowering local communities in Africa and Asia to install and maintain decentralized renewable energy systems. In its first year, CORE trained more than 1,000 people in this capacity. • All of this work in sustainable energy builds off of lessons learned through the long-standing United For Efficiency program (U4E, https://united4efficiency.org/), which is transforming emerging economies to energy efficient appliances, lighting and industrial equipment. I have developed a reputation as a thought leader on sustainable energy (energy efficiency, in particular) and climate action, and most recently on energy efficiency financing. I co-chair the Mission Efficiency Marketplace that brings together the world’s energy efficiency and finance communities to raise ambition—and investments—in energy efficiency. Why sustainable energy? SDG7—the energy goal—underpins all the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The partnerships referenced here focus primarily on SDG7 and make tangential impact on as many as 10 of the 17 UN SDGs.
