GDOT was using dial to provide video to its traffic management center (TMC) which was not efficient and costly. I looked at using DSL to provide a more robust video solution. Since most of the equipment would be stored in metal cabinets, I had to find a DSL solution for that environment. Ruggedcom routers were chosen due to it high environmental ratings. We were able to go from one frame per second to 15 frames per second. While attending a conference in Palm Springs CA, I was looking at ways that GA could benefit from the technology that was on display. Prior to the conference, I had a huge interest in cellular technology and knew the tremendous cost savings that it could provide. We were using dial up to communicate with Changeable Message Signs (CMS). It was very costly because the department had to pay 100.00 per month for service and 25 cents per minute for toll charges. I worked with the lead engineer Mike Hood to develop a cellular network. We purchase a 500 modem from Sixnet and service from Verizon at 11.00 per month with no toll charges. We reduce expensive by over 50% per year and provided unlimited communication to CMS signs. I am very experienced in computer support and once support over 400 users at three metro area office location as well as users around the State. I use VNC and remote desktop to work on most of the users computers and only travel if necessary to other office location. I had to replaced 21 computers from field techs that were located all over the state. They were required to travel to the main office where I was able to install all software and transfer their setting to the new computer by myself. When I was transferred to another location, my co-workers would often comment that it took 4-5 people to replace me.
