Steven Roe’s Expertise Steve is an ecologist specialising in bats. He has over twenty-four years of extensive experience in bat biology, ecology and survey methodology and has fourteen years experience in consultancy. Graduated from a postgraduate degree in environmental consultancy with training and experience in ecology and the consultancy sector. Steve has experience of a range of ecological projects with a special interest in ultrasound analysis, advanced trapping surveys, cave ecosystems and wildlife sound recording. Holds Natural England licences for bats (levels 3 and 4 - WML-A34, bat mitigation class licence (BMCL/low impact) - WML-CL21) and bat earned recognition class licence (WML-CL47) with extensive practical experience of all bat survey and monitoring methods (including radio telemetry, high-speed photography and ringing projects) along with great crested newt (level 1, WML-CL08) and barn owl (disturb nesting, WML-CL29) licences. He has completed the LANTRA CS38 Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue course which enables him to undertake climbing inspections of trees for bat roosts. Steve also has survey experience of other protected species and in May 2019 he was awarded Chartered Ecologist (CEcol) status by CIEEM. Written experience comprises of the preparation and completion of bat mitigation strategies and other protected species reports for development and planning. Other experience comprises the preparation of Natural England licence applications in relation to bats and has held over fifty licences in the last four years for the majority of UK species, the creation of ArcGIS and QGIS maps and extended phase I assessment reports and technical reports for public inquiries. Steve currently manages the company’s fleet of 250+ bat detector units, its in-house sound analysis lab team and advanced bat survey technique projects. Steve is the vice chair of the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) after joining the Board of Trustees in 2018. He was one of the organisers for the UK's first Autumn Swarming Bat Conference which took place in September 2017. Since 2018 he has produced BCT's award-winning podcast, BatChat, on an entirely voluntary basis. Now in it's 5th series it takes listeners out into the field talking to the experts as well as local heroes to bring you the latest from the world of bats. With over 50 episodes to date the show has recently been nominated for four awards and is listened to in 126 countries.
