Sue Herrod’s Expertise Sue Herrod is a British composer/songwriter who has lived in Havana for over 20 years. In the UK - based in Brixton, South London - she worked in local community projects (Black Ink, Shape), in Further Education and as a free-lance composer, writing for BBC/C4 documentaries, Children´s TV and theatre. In Cuba Sue has written for the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Danza Abierta and, in December 2010, presented two concerts of her own songs – QUIET NIGHTS – in the prestigious Bellas Artes Theatre with guests from the USA and Cuba. Quiet Nights is now a project in its own right – dedicated to diversity, experimentation… and to quiet music. In 2012 Sue presented a cycle of songs - UP INTO THE SILENCE (UITS) - written to the poetry of the great post-modernist, E. E. Cummings. UITS used both live (string quartet, piano) and electro acoustic elements and was performed (with artists Diana Fuentes and Aldo Lopez-Gavilan) in Cuba´s largest theatre, Karl Marx. Mounted on the central stage, in the round, with mapping and 5.1 designed sound it was supported and recorded by Colibri Records and was the first concert of its kind in Cuba. The DVD /CD of the live concert won Best Live Concert DVD and Best Poetry Musicalisation in the CubaDisco Awards (2013). The Making Of and the Live Concert DVD were further selected to be shown as part of the Leo Brouwer Festival, 2014. In Cuba Sue also writes cultural blogs and articles, works in educational tourism and is active in a number of antiracist projects. She has written extensively for various cultural and travel magazines such as Time Out, Cuba Absolutely, Cubania, Caledonia Travel and the Esencia Travel Group. Sue has also worked as a fixer, guide and concierge for various documentary film makers, independent travellers and groups. This year (21/22) she begins work on a new multi-media project called Seven Blue: 7 Cuban and 7 international poems will be worked both musically and visually. British public artist, Sue Ridge, will produce cyanatypes for each song. Collaborators will include Cuban composer/pianist Ernesto Oliva and Trinidadian composer, Dominique Le Gendre.
