Tom Erber’s Expertise After graduating the University of Maryland, College Park, I worked towards my dream of becoming an entrepreneur and owning my own restaurant by working for Steak & Ale Corporation. In my pursuit, I, along with my brother, found an opportunity to develop a local bridal publication and lead source, Maryland Bride Magazine. In just over 2 years, we were bought out by Opus Publishing and decided to look into our next venture. We discovered the early stages of the 1st Wave of the Specialty Coffee Boom and became the 1st of the new generation of Direct Importers of world's largest commercial espresso machine company, La Cimbali in June 1993. As the business developed, we recognized that although equipment sales were good, that we needed to grow a recurring revenue stream with coffee sales. We built a relationship with Lavazza Premium Coffees and grew to there 4th largest distributor for a period of time. In the late 90's, the trend for local coffee's, single origins, and flavored coffee started to dominate the market, so we started investigating what was needed to start a roasting company, which we launched the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company in March of 2002. As we were up against strong national & regional brands, we need to differentiate ourselves and did so with making a financial commitment to help restore the Chesapeake, which developed into the H20 Initiative a 2% contribution of coffee sales & direct community engagement. We also committed the company to maintain sustainable business practices from the roaster through to our packaging; truly pioneering areas in the coffee industry. As a result of the recession, we had to refocus the brand from just wholesale to retail and improve our look. We did and by doing so, we attached new investors to help us grow the business. After reorganization and recapitalization, the company has and is one of the premier local coffee roasters in the Mid-Atlantic region.
