William Campbell’s Expertise After 20 years in a variety or writing and editing positions in the publications industry, I elected to leave that career behind in 2011 and pursue a career in law enforcement as a Humane Officer with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA), which, in operation since 1877 is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the world. I likened my rather drastic career change at such a relatively advanced age to a journey of a thousand hurdles -- some large, some small -- any one of which not successfully cleared could have derailed me from achieving my goal. But in 2013, having graduated from Rio Hondo College Police Academy and completed the rigorous and thorough application process involved in obtaining a law enforcement position, I completed that journey when I joined spcaLA's Animal Protection Services Department -- a new journey in and of itself. One that's been as challenging as it has been rewarding.
